Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption (EVP) Systems for Traffic Signals
Helping to Make Roads a Safer Place
Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption (EVP) systems are one of the latest tools to make roads safer. This system changes traffic signals to clear an intersection so that emergency vehicles can pass. EVP devices flash light or infrared pulses to a receiver, most times mounted on a traffic signal pole. Once the pulse has been received, the lights change as needed. Reducing response time for emergency vehicles and increasing safety for vehicles approaching the intersection are the advantages of EVP.
Ruekert/Mielke is working with the City of Pewaukee to add EVP systems to 15 intersections. The City has several intersections that had EVP installed when road reconstructions were completed. But, in order to give emergency responders the consistency of having EVP capability throughout the City, the 15 remaining intersections will now be outfitted with EVP receivers.
Ruekert/Mielke can serve to design, specify, bid out, and provide construction administration to carry out these EVP installation projects. We can also help administer the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and County permit applications and requirements if those entities have jurisdiction. Cost runs approximately $7,000 per intersection, including engineering, materials and installation.
