Village of Dousman, WI

Project Description

The Village of Dousman desired to update the area along Main Street to revitalize the downtown and positively influence the business climate. The aging and failing pavement and underground infrastructure pushed the Village into moving forward with this project. Ruekert and Mielke, Inc. (R/M) designed and provided construction review services for the relay or replacement of all the sanitary sewer main and laterals (7000 L.F.), sewage pumping station and force main (2050 L.F.), water main and services (8160 L.F.), and storm water management system (5085 L.F.).

This project also involved an array of critical items of approval and construction, including four contaminated sites, burying We Energies electric lines, a river crossing, two wetland crossings, storm water access related to navigable waterway, and crossing of a DNR bike trail with multifiber optic lines. This involved special testing for DNR approvals and testing and monitoring throughout the construction phase. Public relations and keeping access to businesses at all times of construction was paramount. Sign boards were installed at each end of the project for businesses to advertise and let customers know that they were open during construction and to post special bulletins.

Also, a “mass” email system was set up to post weekly and special day events to all residents, businesses, and anyone who signed up for the email notifications. This was critical to the communication of all parties. This project was completed in spring of 2015, with the asphalt surface course, tree planting, and final streetscape items.

Project Highlights

The Village’s downtown area of Main Street has been transformed from a system of overhead electrical and cable lines with power poles within the sidewalk to a clear, and open looking street, with new ornate street lights, new pavement, curb and gutter, with an almost no maintenance terrace area of colored cobblestone looking concrete.
